NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and NaNoWriMo 2018 is upon us!
This will be my first-ever participation in this event, even though I’ve been writing stories for twenty-one years. Well, my first-ever, intentional participation anyway…
Why? Well, I wasn’t aware of it until fairly recently (the last five years or so), and the production cycle never meshed with the actual month of November. I was either doing revisions (November 2017) or didn’t have all my prep work finished. This time around, the production cycle dove-tailed with the month of November…perfectly.
I finished the rough draft of the manuscript for Into Vushaar during Labor Day weekend, and as I’ve mentioned elsewhere (perhaps earlier posts but definitely on Facebook), my editor didn’t have an available slot until November. At least three months without any prospects of writing whatsoever!
There’s no way I was going to let that stand. I was getting the itch to write by the September 5th.
With Into Vushaar locked until I receive the editor’s first-pass feedback but still in an unfinished state, I didn’t want to proceed to Book 3 (titled The Golden Flame), because I have no way of knowing what all I’d have to re-write in the first six chapters or so due to editorial first-pass or second-pass revisions. Awakening changed rather substantially between the rough draft and the finalized manuscript.
Since writing Book 3 was out, that left only one other option: start working on one of the other series I want to write!
The novel I will be writing in November is a science fiction story. The title is It Ain’t Over…, and at present, the series title is Cole & Srexxilan. I have titles for the first five books of the series:
- It Ain’t Over…
- …Till It’s Over!
- Haven Ascendant
- The Fires of Aurelius
- Solar Eclipsed
Unlike my Epic Fantasy series, I plan to write at least the first three–maybe four–before I publish. Also unlike my Epic Fantasy series, I do not have a specific end-point in mind for the series. I like trilogies, quintets, and…and…what’s the word for a ten-book series, anyway? Saga? When I finish Solar Eclipsed, I’ll sit down, take a good look at where the series is, and consider where I want it to go. I really don’t like the series that seem to drag on forever and lose that special spark that made them great. I’m not saying that I promise my books will be great, by any means, but I will say that I promise never to publish something I wouldn’t love reading myself.
What’s it about? Well, if I had to sum It Ain’t Over… into one sentence, it would be this:
The dawn of interstellar war entangles an orphan who’s been hiding from his past for thirteen years.
It’s going to be a fun read, and I hope to see…well…hear from you there!
